July 2020 - Exploring Elba, south Corse and Sardinia

What a great sailing from Pisa till Elba's main harbor Portoferraio.

with our Gennaker, 58 miles in less than 6 hrs.

What's best sailing while drawing....

Elba's tour first a stop in Marciana Marina for a nice trek to Marciana ancient village. Nice lunch at Osteria del Noce https://goo.gl/maps/daqWd24Day1pMjD46

Then up to Monte Capanne at 1000m. for a great view over Pianosa island
in the middle of the Thyrrenic sea.

Our best Elba island anchorages are in order:
Fetovaia (5), for its turquoise waters
Nisportino (3), for one's best Elba restaurant, "La Battigia" https://goo.gl/maps/GXoXUUiVeXsJEp6V9
Portoferraio (2), for its 'Mediceo' harbor,Napoleon villa of exile, Medicee fortress,Forte Falcone fortress.
Marciana Marina (1), small quiet village with a nice trek up the highest mountain of M.te Capanne.
Lacona gulf (4), protected harbour when Levante and Mistral hits Elba.

In Fetovaia creek I discovered a leak from the lubrication hose of the turbo charger...leaking 2 liters of oil per hour of motoring!

Instead of mourning the break, we keep sailing, dutifully sailing, tacking and tacking at sunset with a light breeze dancing until night.

A leak that can lead to engine seizure due to lack of oil. So my #1 advise is:
ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ENGINE EVERY HOUR WHILE MOTORING !

3 days stop in Marciana waiting for the Volvo original spare #838869 (the Nr.6).

After repairing our strong Volvo TAMD41 6 cylinders, we leave the nice Elba heading south west to South Corse, Pinarello bay and the nicest Rondinara bay.

A light breeze of 10 kts is useful to test our FFR Code 0 providing us a surprising speed of 9,5 kts

.......and finally the windy Sardinia our best place 7 years ago sailing with our Swan 44 S&S with Emma was just 6 month old...and now she can helm!

The entrance of Maddalena archipelago  coming from North East is through Barrettinelli e Corcelli rocks, what a great sailing here!

Mid July is the time limit to explore Costa Smeralda...afterwards is really a mess of boats anchoring one on the other one!

This is 'Santa Maria' anchoring the first Maddalena archipelago island eastward.

You can see where your anchor is on the ground

Santa Maria short trek till the rusty lighthouse.

In the dawn calm the typical Sardinian  fisherman ''Picco''
go fishing among the islands
